I’m fortunate enough to be able to see the sun rise over Darley Abbey Mills and the trees that surround Darley Park from my house. There’s no better way to start the day. I feel ever so lucky to live so close to such a beautiful park with its rolling green lawns and the River Derwent snaking through it. It’s a place that always manages to lift my spirits, and even the short walk into Derby city centre becomes a treat by cutting through the park.

Many a happy time has been spent feeding the ducks by the Mill, watching the waterfall backing onto the fabulous Darleys restaurant, followed by a walk into the park up to the playground. The park is always swamped by families having picnics in the summer. People laze in the grass enjoying drinks from the local pubs or watching a game of cricket at the new pavilion. In the winter my son can testify that Darley Park provides great entertainment with some fantastic muddy puddles that only wellies and a full body cagoule will survive!

No trip to the park is complete without visiting the cafe. It’s always busy and a real hub of activity with dog walkers, mothers and baby groups and leisurely tea drinkers gathering. I recommend a scoop of the locally produced Bluebells ice cream – it’s a much deserved treat at any time of year!
